The State of AI Video Generation: December 2024

Google’s Veo 2 leads AI video generation right now, with superior quality that outperforms every competitor. I signed up for the waitlist 7 months ago and still can’t get access. That said, several other tools offer compelling options depending on your needs.

Tencent’s open-source Hunyuan matches the quality of most closed-source tools, delivering film-quality output with smooth transitions. While it can’t quite match Veo 2, it’s fully open source and enables community improvements.

OpenAI’s Sora provides the cleanest interface of any video AI tool. For $20/month on top of ChatGPT Plus, you get 50 video generations with solid quality. The physics aren’t as good as Veo 2, but the storyboard editor and remixing features make it highly usable.

Pika 2.0 excels at quick social media content and ads. Its “Video Ingredients” feature lets you upload specific elements to include in generations. While it lacks cinematic polish, it’s ideal for creating engaging short-form content.

Runway Gen 3 remains strong for video editing but hasn’t kept pace with newer innovations. Similarly, Kling offers consistent character generation but falls short of what you can achieve with Sora or Veo 2 plus face editing tools. Kling does have 1.6 now but it’s only incrementally better.

Several trends stand out in the current market:
– Open source tools like Hunyuan are catching up to proprietary systems
– Professional features like storyboard editors are becoming standard
– Tools are consolidating multiple functions rather than staying specialized

However, some key capabilities are still missing:
– Major anticipated releases like ByteDance’s Seaweed and Meta’s Movie Gen remain unreleased
– Most tools struggle with clips longer than 20 seconds
– Character and object consistency across complex scenes needs work

For now, Veo 2 sets the standard for quality, with Hunyuan leading open-source development. The competition between tools continues driving rapid improvements across the board.
