OpenAI has just unveiled Canvas, a new feature for ChatGPT that’s set to enhance writing and coding projects. This addition addresses the limitations of the chat format for complex tasks.
Here’s what Canvas brings to the table:
1. Split-screen interface: Canvas opens alongside the chat, allowing you to work on your project while still communicating with ChatGPT. This setup is ideal for tasks that require extensive back-and-forth.
2. Smart editing for writers: You can generate text directly in Canvas, then highlight sections to request changes. The feature offers shortcuts for adjusting length, reading level, and even adding emojis. You also have the ability to edit the text directly.
3. Coding capabilities: Canvas recognizes when you’re working on code and opens a dedicated window. It provides shortcuts for reviewing, fixing bugs, and translating between languages. You can highlight code to ask for explanations or edits, and ChatGPT can perform code reviews.
4. Manual control: Unlike some AI tools, Canvas allows you to edit both text and code directly in the interface. This gives you significantly more control over your work.
5. Auto-detection: Canvas opens automatically when ChatGPT determines you need it, such as for long content or complex coding tasks. You can also trigger it manually by saying “use canvas” or selecting “GPT-4 with canvas” from the model list.
Currently, Canvas is in beta for ChatGPT Plus and Teams users. Enterprise and Edu tiers will gain access starting October 10th. OpenAI plans to roll it out to all users, including free subscribers, once beta testing is complete.
The future looks promising for Canvas. OpenAI is working on adding support for images, file uploads, and more advanced tools. They’re also fine-tuning the model to better understand project context and improve its editing capabilities.
It’s worth noting that while Canvas excels in many areas, it doesn’t run or preview code directly within the interface. In contrast, Claude Artifacts can perform this function, making it particularly useful for certain coding scenarios. Additionally, Claude’s model is generally considered stronger in coding tasks. The choice between Canvas and other tools like Claude Artifacts will depend on your specific use case.
Canvas represents a significant step forward for ChatGPT. It addresses many of the frustrating limitations of the chat interface and positions ChatGPT more competitively among other AI tools.
