Google’s latest AI music tool, Music FX DJ, lets you build live music loops by typing text prompts. The tool runs in Google’s AI Test Kitchen, where you can stack sounds like 808 Hip-Hop beats and viola melodies to create endless musical combinations.
I tested Music FX DJ extensively, and its standout feature is the ability to adjust each sound element while the music plays. You can boost or reduce individual instruments, add new ones, or remove them – the AI blends these changes smoothly into the ongoing track.
The interface splits into two main sections: a prompt suggestion bar on the left for picking sounds, and a playback box on the right to control your mix. Below the prompt bar, you’ll find random style suggestions to spark ideas.
Jacob Collier, who helped develop Music FX DJ, describes using it as musical improvisation happening in real-time. The tool can shift tempo and key on the fly, letting you shape the intensity of your music by tweaking instrument levels or adjusting their brightness.
Unlike other AI music tools that give you a finished product, Music FX DJ focuses on live creation. You can keep adding prompts endlessly to build your sound. While testing, I found some quirks – asking for 90s house sometimes produced more of an 80s synth pop feel. But the freedom to layer and adjust sounds makes up for these occasional mismatches.
The tool is free to try in the Google AI Test Kitchen. You can download your finished tracks or share them on social media, though you’ll want to check copyright rules around AI-generated music first.
Music FX DJ points to an interesting future where AI helps create music in real-time rather than just generating static tracks. For musicians, producers, or anyone interested in sound creation, it’s worth experimenting with this new approach to making music.
